How to have an eco-friendly dorm this year

How to have an eco-friendly dorm this year

As the summer comes to an end, it’s time to get ready to go back to school! For those of you getting ready to start college, the checklist of survival gear for move-in day is long. Here’s our cheat sheet of the five best items to make life easier during the school year and make that freshman dorm triple feel like home away from home.

1. Reusable water bottle

Make sure to stay hydrated by carrying around a reusable water bottle at all times. More and more college campuses are providing filtered water fountains and having a reusable bottle is definitely easier (and cheaper) than buying bottled water from the store every day.

2. Glass/aluminum food containers with reusable utensils

Investing in quality food containers helps save the planet, and can even help you eat healthier since you need to decide what food to pack. These are also perfect for carrying leftovers from eating out (or smuggling food out of the dining commons).

3. Filtered water pitcher

Don’t stress out about carrying those heavy 24-packs of water bottles back to the dorm. Invest in a water filter instead to help save time, money and your much-needed energy to focus on studying or extracurriculars instead.

4. Coffee/travel mug

Take your coffee on the go with a beautifully-designed coffee mug to help you get energized for those 8 a.m. lectures. Plus, coffee shops usually give discounts to customers that bring in their own mugs — eco-friendly and economics-friendly!

5. Green cleaning supplies

Cleaning supplies can have a strong smell and leave the dorms smelling like you’re in a science lab. Keep your place spotless by investing in green cleaning supplies while keeping your nose happy.
