Eco-Friendly Habits for Summer Vacation
Summer means the start of vacations (or staycations!). It also means taking part in different activities like beach days, road trips, music festivals, and exploring new places. With all the adventures ahead, you’ll probably want to know how you can make your trip eco-friendlier so you and others can continue to visit beautiful locations for years to come. Don’t fret! We’re here to help.
Below are 4 ways to enjoy your vacation while doing your part to keep the Earth happy.
1. Keep recycling. Don’t kick your good habits to the curb because you’re on vacation. You can recycle food and beverage cartons in the majority of the U.S., and can use our site locator tool to confirm. For other recyclables, check the city’s website and pay attention to recycling signs on the bins.
2. Bring your own bag (BYOB). BYOB (bring your own bag) has a whole new meaning these days – join the movement that has people taking their tote bags beyond the neighborhood grocery store. As you’re sightseeing and shopping, take a tote bag with you to place souvenirs in, rather than using the store’s disposable bags.
3. Carry a reusable bottle. Along the same lines, bring along a reusable bottle (yes, even if you’re flying). You can refill it at the airport after you go through security and throughout the rest of your trip. You’ll save money and reduce your waste. If you have to buy water while you’re on the road, consider water that is packaged in a carton – you can refill it until you’re ready to recycle it.
4. Sit down at a restaurant. Rather than getting takeout or delivery while you’re on a trip, go to a restaurant where you can take a load off. You’ll be able to sit down and relax – you’re on vacation after all — and you’ll reduce the waste that would have otherwise been created from takeout.
Help do your part and make sure you leave your vacation destination better than you found it. If you’d like to take your commitment one step further, pledge to recycle here.
